The Best Selling Rugs Of 2023

Best Seller Rugs

Nothing tells you more about the trends and fashions of a moment than the list of the best-selling items.

Sure, you can read what professionals had to say about the upcoming trends of the year, you can read year-end editions of home improvement magazines all you want.

This Verena Dark Wood Rug from Ruggable was one of the best-selling rugs of 2021, and it’s one of our personal favorites, too.

But the list of the best-selling rugs is the reflection of what rugs people actually bought. In other words, it’s an accurate reflection of what really is in fashion. What really is trending.

Fun Fact: a Christmas edition of a magazine is normally edited sometime in the late summer months. This is the amount of time it takes to finish all production, this is when major brands prepare their Christmas campaigns and advertisements. And this is how mainstream publications can align their editorial content with their commercial content (read: ads).

Oh, and this is how inaccurate their “trends of the moment” and “trends of the coming year” predictions will get.

You could argue that rugs and home decor elements will become popular in the first place because they are recommended by professionals and major magazines.

To an extent you are right. But none of these pros and magazines are influential enough to set the trend of the most popular rugs, and none of them are accurate enough to foresee everything that is (or rather will be) gaining popularity.

The trend is, of course, always a broad term.

There will always be different trends among different groups of people when it comes to age, social status, or geographic location. And this can make looking for the actual trends that you will like infinitely more difficult.

But if you really want to tap into the trends of the actual moment, looking at the most popular rugs or in other words the best selling rugs is the best shot you’ve got.

There are a number of characteristics that describe a rug, and sure enough there are trends for all of these characteristics.

But barely will be anything more defining to the rug fashions and trends of the current moment than the most popular rug colors.

And when you look at the rugs most people bought, you will see that the two most popular rug colors of the moment are grey and blue.

Gray has been in fashion for a while now, so its appearance on the top list is nothing surprising.

And blue, well, has always been in fashion.

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2021 was “The Ultimate Grey”. Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year for 2021 was Aegean Teal.

Yes, teal is somewhat different from a generic blue, but in fact, this shade of blue is so popular for rugs that we made a special section for the best teal rugs you can buy on the market right now.

And before you say that 2021 is the story of yesteryear, things are not looking very different this year either. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2022 is Very Peri which can colloquially be called a somewhat purple-ish shade of blue. And Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year for 2022 is October Mist 1495, which is, well, a warm shade of gray.

So blue and gray rugs being in fashion is really spot on when it comes to the zeitgeist of our times.

You’re not here to read about our transforming times and which colors reflect it the best.

You’re here to read about rugs.

And we’re here to tell you that the three most popular rug styles of the moment are some of the most classical rug styles that have ever existed.

  1. Persian Rugs
  2. Moroccan Rugs
  3. Kilims

It seems that the retro craze with the popularity of mid-century rugs, while still dominant, is slowly in retreat. So are bohemian, minimalist, and contemporary style rugs.

Almost as if these turbulent times bring out the desire or even nostalgia for the “good old times”, and this is best-brought home by these ageless classics.

Best Selling Rug Brands

Like every other market sector, rugs are now dominated by a number of big brands. The popularity of these brands is an important predictor of where fashions and trends are going.

Some of the most popular rug brands of the moment include

  1. Safavieh
  2. Surya
  3. Loloi Rugs
  4. Wayfair Rugs
  5. Rugs USA
  6. Ruggable

Are oriental rugs out of style? (Moroccan, Persian)

We have a very simple answer for this question: no.

First, oriental rugs are never really out of style. A Moroccan or a Persian rug will always be among the most timeless floor covering pieces you can ever have.

Second, if anything, oriental rugs are back in style, big time. As we established earlier, there is a renaissance of Persian Rugs, Moroccan Rugs, and Kilims. So much so that these styles are now more popular than contemporary, western-style rugs like bohemian, mid-century, or contemporary style rugs.

Distressed rugs have something very special about them, don’t they?

Looking much older than they actually are, they bring character to any room, and distressed rugs can easily turn a standard apartment, furnished from a budget chain like Target, turn into something more unique and stylish.

The popularity of distressed rugs lies in the combination of their character and their price point (ie. still a lot cheaper than real vintage rugs).

Plus, no matter what the appearance suggests, distressed rugs are in no way damaged. While looking old and shabby, in fact, many distressed rugs are made with cutting-edge production technologies, and thus become very easy to maintain and very durable as well.

Why do people like vintage rugs?

Vintage rugs are a bit like distressed rugs, but all without the fake component.

What’s more, some vintage rugs are actually in exquisite condition.

And they still have the capability of bringing additional value to the room with their age, their history, and their looks as well.

Vintage rugs are evergreens from a fashion angle, but buying vintage rugs requires some preparation on its own, so if this is what you’re after, you’re best off reading our guide for buying vintage and antique rugs.

Without a doubt, the most dominant segment of rugs is that of the area rugs.

So what’s trending for rugs will likely be similar to what’s cool for other types of rugs as well.

While there are a gazillion types and styles for area rugs on the market today, and there will always be enough fans for all of these styles, some of them seem to have their moment just now.

  1. Bold colorful prints.

Yes, minimal and toned back styles are still in fashion, but some people have rightly realized, that sometimes more is more.

Bold and colorful prints on area rugs are a big up, especially if you have enough space to pull it off right.
  1. Geometric patterns

Geometric patterns on area rugs are great, because they can set the character of the rug (and consequently the entire room) without necessarily becoming the design focus point of the space.

It’s just a great balance of being characteristic, but not overly spectacular.
  1. Animal prints

Not all animals are allowed on rugs.

    Most Golden Retrievers are.

And some animal prints as well.

Actually animal prints on area rugs has been an upcoming trend and we predict it will continue for at least a year or two to come.
  1. Vintage rugs

As we said before, it’s nice to have something with a character around. Vintage rugs truly elevate the character and the overall quality of the room they are put in.

    No wonder they are expensive.

And no wonder that they are still extremely popular.
