How can you say if a wool rug is handmade?
We could jokingly say, that it’s easy to tell if a rug is handmade or machine-made just by looking at its price tag. Semi-jokingly we could also mention, that if not the price tag, the product details section will definitely give the rug away: any decent brand or producer will let you know if the rug was handmade or not, and you can rely on what they have to say. With Safavieh Rugs, as one of the highest reputed, biggest rug brands out there, you can rest assured.
I guess, however, that this is still not the answer you are here for.
So here are a few pointers, although none of these will make you a rug expert in just a few paragraphs.
Look at the back of the rug! The easiest way to determine whether a rug was handmade or not, is to look at the back of the rug, and look for anything uneven. Provided that the rug is new, a machine-made rug will likely be completely uniform, unlike any handmade rug. If the rug has fringes, that can also be a pointer: machine-made rugs usually have the fringes sewn on them, while with handmade ones, the rug is usually tha part of the rug’s foundation.
With that said, your safest bet is still to rely on an expert (ideally your rug producer or vendor to point you in the right direction, whether you are after more affordable machine-made, or higher quality handmade rugs.
Do Safavieh handmade wool rugs last longer than machine-made rugs?
The longevity of a rug (in other words how long do rugs last) is determined by a multitude of factors, and most of the time, the fact that whether a rug was handmade or machine-made is not even one of those factors. Foot traffic, maintenance, and considerations whether the rug is exposed to direct sunlight will easily overwrite any other angles.
However, I will say, that handmade rugs are usually of higher and better quality than machine-made rugs, and higher quality rugs will usually last longer (given the same circumstances). So if you really try to make your decision based on this very factor, I think it is fair to assume that, all other things being equal, a Safavieh handmade wool rug will last longer than a Safavieh machine-made wool rug.
Can Safavieh handmade wool rugs be washed?
Handmade wool rugs are usually delicate items of high quality. While it is essential for wool rugs to keep them clean and regularly maintain them, in order to make the most of them, it is also important to know that for most people washing them at home will not be an option. Unless the product description says otherwise, we would strongly advise against washing handmade wool rugs in your home washer. Let the professionals deal with this!
We recommend vacuuming your rug at least once a week (depending on foot traffic, and whether you have pets or kids, this can be more), spot clean it immediately when a spill happens, and give it a thorough, professional cleaning once or twice a year. And like with Oriental rug cleaning, cleaning a handmade wool rug is a profession in and of itself. Leave it to the pros, please!
